Technical Document Translation & Post-Editing with Generative AI Support Translating Railway Specifications
We performed the translation of technical specifications related to interlocking devices and other railway subsystems using AI-supported machine translation.
Tasks
DTP Preparation
Graphic preparation, editing, and layout of non-editable figures and tables in the documentation into a text document format.
Machine Translation
We translate the English source text into Hungarian using traditional machine translation, then verify and correct technical terms using generative AI based on a project-specific glossary before post-editing.
Post-Editing
The machine-generated translation is checked and corrected by a team of 3 linguists.
DTP Post-Work
Checking and finalizing the translated documents from a graphical perspective.
Challenges
Tight Deadline
The translation and post-editing of the large documentation had to be completed within a tight deadline.
Technical Expertise
The text related to railway construction required not only linguistic expertise but also a high level of technical proficiency from our vendors.
Terminology
The correct and consistent use of technical terms and terminology in the documentation was of paramount importance, so it was especially important to find a solution for automated checking and correction.
Solutions
Terminology Database
Utilizing the project-specific terminology database collected during our previous assignments.
Generative AI
We used a generative AI-based solution to perform automatic terminology correction of the raw machine translation.
Efficiency
We reduced the time and workload required for human post-editing.
Results
All parts of the documentation, including graphical elements, were translated and post-edited on time and with the appropriate quality. Automated terminology correction and the application of generative AI significantly improved the accuracy of machine translation regarding technical terms. Close cooperation between the linguist team and the project manager ensured that the submitted material met the requirements in every respect.
"We asked EDIMART Translation Agency to translate a quite serious Chinese/English technical specification. The material was partly railway specific, containing a large amount of technical terms typical of the interlocking discipline. The material also discusses ETCS and other subsystem topics. The translation turned out well, the insertion of figures is like in the original material. The professional material will be a great help in the professional work required for the approval of the MÁV interlocking system license plan."
